We ate squirrel a lot as a kid.

My favorite use for squirrel is in gumbo.

BTW> The author talks about grabbing a live squirrel.

RESIST ANY TEMPTATION TO DO SO.

I picked up one up that I had hit with a long distance .410 shot, only a few pellets must have hit him. Anyways, I thought he was dead, only to see him twist his head around and bit me just off center of my right index finger. Those long teeth missed the bone and almost went through, I had blood on the backside of my fingernail.

His head then hit a tree at very high speed.

You talk about some REALLY REALLY REALLY serious pain. That sucker hurt for weeks.

I still stewed him.... little bastard.

That's the easiest way. I'll serve myself first, pick out the meaty limbs and let you eat the rib cages.

Thanks. One of life's mysteries has been solved.

How many squirrels can you get into a number 10 can?

40, if you dehydrate them.

Unfortunately it is a joke. If you actually click on the buy link you get:

I can't believe you actually came to this page! Do you honestly think we'd sell dehydrated squirrel?? What kind of sick freaks do you think we are?? Look at those cute little guys....

I'd have to be awfully hungry to eat one of them! Oh, and keep in mind, the only way to dehydrate meat is to make jerky out of it. You can't just dehydrate it and can it. It will go bad.

Nobody makes dehydrated squirrel meat. We're just havin' fun.... Hope you enjoyed the joke!

i was wondering what the heck was eating EVERYTHING in my garage. i thought it was a rat or a mouse. i was completely in AMAZEMENT at its thoroughness and ability to eat a quart of potassium fatty acids (soap for killing bugs) and keep going.

damn thing went through every single f'ing box. it chewed the cover of the power supply for a backup hard drive - then chewed on one of the wires inside the power supply.

anyway, i finally figured it out. there's a tree filled with squirrels above the garage.

AND NOW - i'm going to go check the trap i set for it yesterday.

... nope, no squirrel.

i think squirrels are a good potential food source. Fat squirrels, that is. it's a lot of work to skin them.

from an Operations Management point of view, skinny squirrels are a losing proposition - as a food source.

what does it taste like ?

$4 a pound - that's kind of pricey.

Quarter the carcass, chicken fry the quarters (I use Kentucky Kernel Seasoned Flour), make a thin gravy (milk or water, I prefer milk) in the skillet, put the chicken fried quarters in the gravy and simmer for a while, till the gravys thick. Mmmm Mmmm Goood!

Sort of like rabbit (to me if I remember correctly) very lean dark.

Skinning isn't too hard, cut the front and rear feet off, slice down to belly from the rear feet (or where they were), make a cut around the front feet, have someone hold the rear legs, and the pull the skin off like you would a sock..

Once you get the skin to the head, cut off the head, gut, remove anus, and you are done.

If you do it right, you wont even get much hair at all on the meat.

It has been almost 20 years since I have skinned a squirrel, i think I remember that right.

can they be tamed ?

i was so impressed by this one squirrel's destructive power, i was thinking about putting him in a cage.

but it's probably better just to let him go a few miles away, if i ever catch him.

Yep that's how we skin them. Don't usually remove the front feet right away though, you'll have to cut them off eventually, but right at first there is no point.

We cut down the back legs towards the butt, cut around the tail (if you want to save the squirrel tail) otherwise just lop it off. cut the back feet off. cut down the stomach towards the head, all the way to the neck. Peel the back legs to make "handles" and then just start pulling, It should just peel right off, if it doesn't just keep a sharp knife handy to slice any parts holding you up. it will peel inside out keeping all the hair away from the carcass.

After gutting/skinning we usually soak them in water overnight to leach out any remaining blood and clean any hair we go on them off. I wouldn't worry about that if you actually needed the nutrition though.

If you want to save the tails, we hung them on our walls as "trophies", cut around the base of the tail and pull the bone/meat out of the tail. if the tail starts turning inside out thats ok, just don't let it turn ALL THE WAY inside out. Once you get down to the tip of the tail it should pull free and still have a little but turned the right way. now just turn the tail fur side out and let it hang for 2-3 days to dry and it will be perfect. Never had a tail smell unless you broke the tail bone off inside the tail, then we just threw them away.

When I was a kid I didn't mess around squirrel hunting and I made sure I got squirrels to eat. We killed them with a 12 gauge, full choke.

I worked for TSA* for a while (no longer!), as a baggage screener, and you would not believe the crap that came through. The heaviest bags/boxes were those of immigrants and foreign tourists taking American gift home. To this day I do not understand it, but if you are Vietnamese and you live in Detroit, the item to bring back are plump California squirrels. Preferably dressed and frozen. This happened at least 5 times on my shift.

*Do NOT get me started on those rat bastards!
